The Museo Galileo is pleased to announce that the Italian Society for the History of Science (SISS) will present the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award (Premio alla Carriera) to Paolo Galluzzi. An internationally renowned historian of science, member of the Accademia dei Lincei, and former president of SISS, Galluzzi led our institute as director from 1982 to 2021, and currently serves as its Honorary President. The award will be presented at the University of L'Aquila during the Society's National Conference, scheduled from May 27 to 29, 2026.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is conferred for having "successfully combined philological rigor and original interpretation, institutional vision and a capacity for innovation, making a decisive contribution to the enhancement of Italy's scientific and technical heritage."
Throughout his career, Galluzzi has made significant contributions to studies on Renaissance science, Leonardo da Vinci, and Galileo, publishing numerous essays and curating major international exhibitions. Alongside his research, he has maintained a steady institutional and ministerial commitment to the protection and legal recognition of historical-scientific heritage, an effort honored in 2003 with the Gold Medal for Meritorious Service to Culture awarded by the President of the Italian Republic. Furthermore, by linking research with heritage enhancement, he was among the first to grasp the potential of digital technologies for culture—a vision that led to innovative multimedia tools, such as the Museo Galileo’s digital libraries, reshaping the way science is narrated and disseminated.
Established by the Italian Society for the History of Science in 2011, the Lifetime Achievement Award is given to scholars who have stood out for their work in promoting the history of science and scientific culture. The previous edition (2022) was awarded to the biologist and historian Pietro Omodeo.
