Note on reproduction rights for images of the collection

Museo Galileo – Institute and Museum of the History of Science, with reference to requests for the use and reproduction of images related to its collections, wishes to provide clarification regarding the applicable regulatory framework.

In particular, it should be noted that Museo Galileo, as a private legal entity, is not among the cultural institutions or sites under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture. Consequently, the Museum is not required to apply the "Guidelines for determining the minimum amounts of fees and compensation for the granting of use of assets delivered to the institutions and places of culture of the Ministry of Culture," attached to Ministerial Decree No. 108 of March 21, 2024.

The Museum naturally retains full autonomy in defining the economic conditions and methods for granting image use, in compliance with current legislation on the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage.

At the same time, Museo Galileo confirms its commitment to the widest possible dissemination and circulation of knowledge regarding the scientific and historical heritage preserved in its collections. To this end, the Institute is available to evaluate, on a case-by-case basis, forms of collaboration and specific agreements that favor the free use of images, particularly for study, research, education, and cultural outreach.

Professional photo/video shoots and image reproduction are subject to authorization.

Requests must be submitted using the appropriate forms.

Requests for printed materials and manuscripts should be directed to the Library’s reproduction department.
