On February 14, 2025—in the presence of Giovanni Bettarini, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Florence—two recently acquired artworks of great value were presented at the Museo Galileo. They are a juvenile portrait of Galileo Galilei (early 17th century) and a rare monastic alarm clock (late 14th - early 15th century), which was donated by the daughter of the great collector Gian Carlo Del Vecchio. The portrait, attributed to Santi di Tito (1536-1603), is on display in Room VII, “Galileo’s New World”. The monastic alarm clock will soon be included in the museum itinerary, in the room devoted to historical mechanical clocks on the ground floor.
“Galileo VR. Life, discoveries, and the process”, a collaborative project of the Museo Galileo and VIS–Virtual Immersions in Science, a spinoff of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, was also launched. “Galileo VR” aims to narrate the leading figure of the Tuscan scientist, his life and groundbreaking discoveries by means of a virtual-reality video to be watched with stand-alone VR visors. Next spring these visors will be available to visitors in a location adjacent to Room VII.
