The Museo Galileo joins in mourning the passing of Luigi Zangheri (1943-2025), a distinguished architect, architectural and landscape historian, Professor of History of Gardens and Landscapes and Restoration of Historic Green Spaces at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Florence, and President emeritus of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. A prolific author, he published extensively on Tuscan architecture from the 16th to the 18th centuries, the Medici Villas and historic gardens. He was also a leading figure in landscape conservation, serving on important national and international commissions. He was President of the International Committee for Cultural Landscapes ICOMOS-IFLA, member of the National Committee for the Study and Conservation of Historic Gardens of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, and promoter for the Regione Toscana of the project to nominate the “Medici Villas and Gardens” for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. His notable publications include Pratolino e il giardino delle meraviglie (Gonnelli 1979), Storia del Giardino e del paesaggio (Olschki 2007), Ville e giardini medicei in Toscana (Olschki 2017), and Nel giardino cinese della luminosità perfetta (Olschki 2020).
For the Museo Galileo, Professor Zangheri studied Palazzo Castellani, providing decisive guidance for the building's restoration phases between the 1990s and 2010.
