The website created by Museo Galileo makes it possible to explore the 53 maps painted on the cabinet doors of the Map Room in Palazzo Vecchio as well as Egnazio Danti’s terrestrial globe. Thanks to the 3D reconstruction of the room, it is possible to explore the cosmographic contents in detail and read the cartouches describing the geographical features, history and customs of the peoples in every part of the known world.
The website includes nine films: an introductory one, six dedicated to the protagonists of the cosmographic design project (Cosimo I de’ Medici, Giorgio Vasari, Miniato Pitti, Egnazio Danti, Stefano Buonsignori, Antonio Lupicini), and two on the architectural projects themselves, as conceived by Giorgio Vasari and by Antonio Lupicini.
The website—which has been realised within the framework of a scientific cooperation agreement with the Municipality of Florence and with the support of Friends of Florence—was launched on November 27 in Palazzo Vecchio, on the occasion of the conference on the Map Room’s restoration.
