gallery of busts

The collection of busts belonging to the Ospedale di Santa Maria Nuova, which has been on deposit in the Museo Galileo for many years, has become part of the permanent museum itinerary of the Florentine hospital. The Gallery of Busts, located in the Cortile della Samaritana, offers a glimpse of the history of the Hospital, but also of Florence in general, through the portraits of the doctors who worked there in past centuries and of the grand dukes who made it a point of reference for medicine in Tuscany. The collection consists of twelve busts (eight doctors, four grand dukes), probably models for marble sculptures, made between the early 17th century and the late 19th century.

The Gallery, realised on the initiative of the Azienda Usl Toscana Centro and the Fondazione Santa Maria Nuova ETS in collaboration with the Museo Galileo, was inaugurated on 14 November 2024, in the presence of the President of Tuscany Eugenio Giani and representatives of the institutions involved.
