In this monograph, Galluzzi presents a comprehensive account of Galileo’s studies on the fundamentals of statics and the science of motion, highlighting how the Pisan scientist was long engaged in developing a theory of mechanical and natural motion that would eliminate any distinction between static and dynamic principles.

It is within this context that the author conducts a meticulous investigation into the complex history of the meaning of “momento”, a concept central to Galileo’s reflections on motion. The author thus traces the in-depth studies Galileo devoted to a term initially linked to the concepts of weight and distance, and later to those of velocity and time.

To better contextualize the complex evolution of these concepts within Galileo’s work, the author also examines the history of the term’s meanings from antiquity to the 16th century: from the biblical tradition to Vitruvius’s surprising use of the term, from the translations of the Corpus de ponderibus to Aristotle’s Physics and the pseudo-Aristotelian Mechanical Problems.

By examining the evolution of scientific terminology and its conceptual implications, the book shows how Galileo's mathematical approach reshaped the understanding of motion and natural processes, while confronting the intellectual resistance of his time. Combining detailed historical reconstruction with methodological insight, this study provides a crucial resource for scholars of early modern science, the history of physics and mathematics, epistemology, and the development of scientific language.
